Surgical Stewardship – A Personal Opinion

Surgical Stewardship – A Personal Opinion

The following is a commentary from one of our spine surgeon partners from the state of Texas.

Every aspect of the care of spinal conditions is complex, from diagnosis to management. When the treatment course also includes surgical intervention, the complexity heightens. Yet it is necessary to account for every detail in order to provide the best quality care.

Marvel Group’s Surgical Stewardship Program is a suite of comprehensive resources that help complete the whole process of spinal surgical care to facilitate excellence at every step. It is based on consistency of service – one clinical specialist works with one surgeon for all spinal cases so there is never a concern about lines of communication or provision of assistance. The specialist is there from the first intake, making sure that needed information is obtained. They are there to facilitate education of the patient throughout the care. For the surgery, the specialist makes sure that all the proper equipment and preparation has been done in the surgical suite and the recovery areas. And they are in attendance at follow-up to make sure that all the patient’s recovery and rehabilitation needs are met.

“I love the Surgical Stewardship Program because it is geared towards my best practices and the needs of my patients,” says one spinal surgeon. “The program is customized to fit my workflow and the range of cases I treat. I feel that all the busy work is taken care of so I can focus on the patient and the surgery themselves.”

One of the added benefits of the Surgical Stewardship model is the collection of data throughout a case and across the board for all the surgeon’s spinal patients. The data can be used to promote careful selection, review of outcomes, and accurate reporting so that the surgeon and the patient are always in sync with their understanding and expectations. The result is improved efficiency and accuracy, as well as the ability to measure and improve long-range outcomes.

Overall, the Surgical Stewardship Program is designed with one outcome in mind – to help surgeons maintain their excellence in the surgical care of their spinal patients.
