Personal Experience Triggers the Surgical Stewardship Program
Marvel Group was started when founder Jamie Rindler was a young parent in his 20s facing his own back surgery. With three children in the family and twins on the way, you can imagine how tight the family budget was. And yet, the spine surgery included a patient-responsibility component of approximately $10,000.
At that moment in time, Jamie and his wife were confronted with all the fears that patients have about back surgery, primarily the fear that something might not go according to plan, and a second surgery might be necessary. How would they be able to handle it?
That second surgery would have “broke the bank” for Jamie and his wife. If follow-up surgery was necessary, they would not have been able to afford it.
Fortunately, Jamie’s surgeon was able to perform the surgery so well that no follow-ups were needed, and in fact, Jamie made a swift recovery and has enjoyed a healthy back for the couple of decades since then.
Jamie went on to advance in his career as a medical device professional, but always remembered his own back surgery experience. He was determined to someday provide patients with a solution to the financial risk he faced as a young patient and father. The opportunity presented itself when he was mentored by a talented neurosurgeon who also became a friend.
This surgeon showed Jamie what goes on behind the scenes for independent spine surgeons, and Jamie was amazed to find that it was a real struggle for these “free agent” private practice surgeons to maintain their practices. There were conflicts everywhere – with hospitals, insurance companies, salespeople, and even other surgeons. In short, just staying afloat was a constant struggle. But nothing is more frustrating for a highly skilled surgeon than competing for the opportunity to help patients.
That’s when the idea was born in Jamie’s mind that he could do something to help private practice spine surgeons while simultaneously providing a solution to the problem he faced as a patient.
Thus, the Surgical Stewardship program was born, and it has been steadily gaining momentum ever since.
